Housing bill could be law without signature
WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump has chosen not to sign a sweeping housing affordability bill on Friday, in protest of Congress not approving a strict voter ID bill that does not have enough support to pass.
Still, the housing measure could become law on Friday without Trump's signature, as he had 10 days to issue a veto and stop the measure.

Platner formally withdraws from race
PORTLAND -- Graham Platner has submitted his paperwork to formally withdraw from Maine's U.S. Senate race, officially ending an upstart yet troubled campaign whose dissolution threatens Democrats' pursuit of chamber control.
Platner's paperwork was received Friday by the Maine secretary of state's office.

Crew attacked in strait sue shipping company
BANGKOK -- Three former crew members of a Thai cargo ship struck in the Strait of Hormuz in March have filed a lawsuit against the vessel's operator. They allege labor rights violations and unfair dismissal.
The Mayuree Naree was hit by a projectile north of Oman on March 11, killing three crew members. The plaintiffs claim the company unnecessarily endangered their lives by sailing through the risky area. They say they were dismissed before completing their contracts and received inadequate compensation.

Students abducted by militants rescued
ABUJA -- The Nigerian government has announced the rescue of students abducted by militants in Oyo state in May. Authorities initially reported more than 40 people were taken on May 15. A teacher was killed shortly after the abduction.
Eight militants were arrested, and an unspecified number were killed during the operation.
