Military searches for missing Marine
SAN DIEGO -- Officials say multiple agencies are searching for a U.S. Marine who went missing during a training exercise off the coast of southern California.
The Navy says crews began searching for the Marine early Thursday morning, shortly after midnight. The Marine was reported missing from the USS Anchorage during integrated training between the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
117 dead dogs found at 'no-kill' shelter
FORTUNA -- Authorities say the remains of at least 117 dogs were found on the grounds of a California "no-kill" animal shelter, many of them with gunshot wounds.
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said Friday that it also discovered 21 canine skulls, hundreds of bones and other remains during searches at Miranda's Rescue Animal Sanctuary, a 50-acre facility in Fortuna, California.

Operation launched along Afghan border
ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani officials say its security forces have launched a major operation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, targeting militant hideouts. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar says the operation follows multiple militant attacks across the country.
There was no immediate response from Afghanistan.

Skydiving plane crashes, killing 11
TOMBLAINE -- A skydiving plane has crashed in northeastern France, killing all 11 people on board.
Authorities say the plane suffered a malfunction and fell almost vertically after taking off from the Nancy-Essey airfield Saturday. The dead included five parachuting instructors, five novice jumpers and the pilot.
