Quarantine ends for ship passengers
OMAHA -- The last eight Americans who endured 42 days in a specialized hospital quarantine unit after exposure to an unusual hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship that killed three people have left the Nebraska facility.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services officials on Monday confirmed the end of the quarantine. The eight had spent six weeks at the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center because symptoms of hantavirus have taken as long as 42 days to appear in previous outbreaks.

Kirk suspect's roommate won't testify
PROVO -- The Utah judge in the murder case of Charlie Kirk's killing has denied a defense request to force Tyler Robinson's former roommate to testify in person during the preliminary hearing.
Judge Tony Graf said Monday that the credibility of any testimony can be challenged later if the case goes to trial. Graf also postponed a ruling on whether prosecutors could face sanctions for comments to the media about a bullet fragment recovered from the conservative activist's body until Friday.

Court reinstates murder conviction
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court has reinstated a murder conviction in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz.
The justices, by a 6-3 vote Monday, granted an appeal from New York prosecutors who had urged them to undo a federal appeals court decision that overturned the verdict. The three liberal justices dissented.

Confirmed Ebola cases top 1,000
BUNIA -- Authorities say confirmed cases of the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo have reached 1,003, including 254 deaths.
A total of 100 people have recovered in the outbreak concentrated in the Ituri province since it was declared on May 15, Congo's Ministry of Health said late Sunday. The Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no vaccines or treatment, has been the worst ever after just a month.

Officer killed before gunman shot dead
MONTREAL -- Police say a suspect armed with a long gun opened fire at a Montreal hotel, killing a police officer before officers returned fire, killing him.
A civilian also died, but it wasn't immediately clear who fired that shot. Police Chief Fady Dagher said a second officer was seriously injured but is in stable condition.

Health minister found in contempt
NAIROBI -- Kenya's High Court has found the health minister in contempt of court for failing to halt the construction of an Ebola quarantine facility intended for Americans, despite existing court orders.
The court ordered Minister Aden Duale to appear on Tuesday for sentencing. Earlier this month, the minister defended the project, arguing that the facility would benefit both Kenyans and international partners.
