Report details how guns get to crimes
The group Everytown for Gun Safety used court records to trace more than 250 guns bought at nearly two dozen Academy Sports + Outdoors chain stores that had been trafficked over three years in a handful of federal straw purchasing prosecutions.
Advocates say the cases highlight some of the red flags that licensed firearms dealers can ignore or miss as thousands of guns make their way to the hands of people otherwise prohibited from buying them.

Rubio testifies in ex-lawmaker’s trial
MIAMI — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has testified for nearly three hours over his interactions with former Florida congressman David Rivera. Rubio’s longtime friend has been accused of secretly lobbying on behalf of Venezuela’s government.
On the stand Tuesday, Rubio said he “would’ve been shocked” had he known Rivera was working for Maduro.

Bolsonaro to serve sentence at home
SAO PAULO — Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro will continue to serve his 27-year sentence for a coup attempt at home instead of in prison due to failing health.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes argued on his decision on Tuesday he will review the case within 90 days, but allowed the 71-year-old to return to his residence in capital Brasilia after he is discharged from hospital.

American national released after year
KABUL — Afghanistan’s Taliban government says that authorities have released American academic Dennis Coyle, held in Afghanistan since January 2025.
A statement from the country’s foreign ministry said the academic researcher had been released in Kabul, the country’s capital, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday following Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.
