PSU fans really can’t complain

I watched The NitWits TV show after the loss to Iowa and I got a kick out of the panel’s comments. But then again, what would one expect from Penn State homers? Keith Conlin seemed to believe that the game was over by the time Sean Clifford was hurt. Apparently he had a crystal ball that showed that an excellent Iowa coaching staff would fail to make any adjustments in the next two-plus quarters to what Penn State was doing. Look at what happened to Texas against Oklahoma Saturday. And for that matter, I can remember a Top-5 ranked Penn State team that was probably better than ...

PSU needs stronger mask requirement Of all the changes to Beaver Stadium admission and operation this year, the most important element seems to have been totally discarded. That being the requirement to “mask-up” while at indoor portions of the stadium. Does anybody in stadium management understand that the COVID-19 pandemic continues? Have Penn State Athletics been made aware of the spread of the Delta variant? Sans a few announcements on the public address system, I couldn’t find any evidence of Covid precautions at last Saturday’s game. There were no ...

Williams was special talent at Saint Francis Reading the Mirror sports pages on Thursday, Aug. 26 brought back memories from years ago. I was saddened by the news of Sandy Williams’ death, but remembering how his basketball skills impressed me as a 19-20-year-old young man brought back many good memories of Saint Francis basketball in the early 1960s. I hadn’t really seen many basketball games above the high school level in the early ’60s. I had seen Cal Fowler play quite a few games, and I had never seen anyone that could handle the ball, pass or shoot like he ...

Advice from seasoned fisherman

This letter is in response to the July 3-4 mailbag letter “Fishing for wild trout should be preserved” by Nick Vrabel of Altoona. The article Vrabel refers to can be found by googling “Pennsylvania Bait Anglers Beware.” I fish strictly with minnows. I’m 74 years of age and have caught trout every month of year, including January and February, for I’d say the last 15 years. I’m not positive, but I think I have only killed one trout the last two years. Ninety-nine percent of the trout caught I’ve hooked cleanly in the mouth jaw area. I usually hook and land ...

Fishing for wild trout should be preserved The diabolical plot to grab over 2,800 miles of Class A trout streams from bait anglers by some commissioners was voted down by other commissioners. Science prevailed, and it showed no damaging effects of bait fishing on wild trout. The scam was orchestrated by a commissioner so he and his fly fishing buddies would have the only access to these waters. He claimed it was to protect the resource. If protection was the case, he should not be allowed to fish these waters, either. The best protection would be no fishing at all. If he ...

Osaka deserves credit, not shame The ill treatment of 23-year-old Naomi Osaka, professional tennis player was shameful. Once again, as usual, an individual with mental health issues is chastised and shunned rather than shown compassion. Because I have battled mental illnesses for over 35 years, I laud the strength shown by Ms. Osaka in publicizing her plight. I know very well the stigma our country continues to engender in its attitude toward someone battling mental illness(es). The piece-meal efforts to address mental illness in our country are atrocious. Until a concerted ...
