Blair County has strong showing at Ultimate Warrior event

MORRISDALE — Blair County will be well represented in the semifinals of the Ultimate Warrior Tournament as six area wrestlers won their quarterfinal bouts on Friday at West Branch High School.

Hollidaysburg advanced four to the semifinals in Connor Sidney (107), Landon Krupka (114), Brayden Sidney (121) and freshman Keegan Hewitt (189). Tyrone’s Mason VanAllman (172) and Kyle Scott (189) also reached the semifinals.

The tournament was still going on with consolation bouts late Friday. As of 10:15 p.m., the Golden Tigers were in ninth place with 76 points. Reynolds led the team race by five points, 120-115, over Derry Area.

The tournament was to resume at 9 a.m. with the fourth round of consolations, with the junior varsity tournament starting at 9:30 in the auxiliary gym. The semifinals and consolation quarterfinals were set for 11 a.m. Consolation semifinals are at 1:15 p.m.

Barring a change in the schedule due to the impending winter storm, there will be a session break. The third, fifth and seventh-place bouts are set for 3 p.m., and the championship finals will follow at approximately 5:15 p.m.

The top-seeded Scott, who was beaten by Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close in last year’s finals, has bulldozed his way through the tournament two pins and two technical falls. He’ll face the fifth-seeded Hewitt in the semifinals looking for his 150th career win. Hewitt went 3-0 with a pin and two technical falls.

The fifth-seeded Connor Sidney went 3-0 with a pin, decision and technical falls, faces Derry’s top-seeded Mason Keesecker in the semifinals.

Krupka, seeded third, won his first three bouts with a technical fall, pin, and an 8-1 decision over Philipsburg-Osceola’s Jacob Dugan in the quarterfinals. He faces Southern Columbia’s second-seeded Rowen Humphrey next.

The fifth-seeded Brayden Sidney went 2-0 with a fall and a 5-3 decision to reach the semifinals, where he’ll get DuBois’ top-seeded Mateo Gallegos.

The fifth-seeded VanAllman recorded three falls to earn a semifinal berth against Derry’s top-seeded Mason Horwat.

Pulling off the upset

BEDFORD — Four wrestlers from the Mirror’s core coverage area, including two from Central and two from Central Cambria, advanced to the semifinals of the Thomas Automotive Wrestling Classic on Friday at Bedford High School.

Central’s Ty Matthews (107) and Blair Miller (285) made the semifinals, as did Central Cambria’s upset-minded Hadyn Strittmatter (133) and Jeremy Hajzus (189).

Central, which has five others still alive in the consolations, and the Red Devils, who have three in the consolations, are tied for 11th among 31 teams with 65.5 points.

Clearfield leads the team standings by a half point over Huntingdon, 109-108.5. Chestnut Ridge is in fourth with 101.5 – a half point behind Burrell – but the Lions have six in the semifinals.

The tournament resumes at 9:30 this morning with the fourth round of consolations. The semifinals and consolations quarterfinals follow at approximately 10:45 a.m. The consolation semifinals and seventh-place bouts are at noon.

The ninth-seeded Strittmatter pulled off a big upset in the quarterfinals when he beat West Greene’s top-seeded Noah Collins, 13-4. Strittmatter, who also had a pin and a technical fall, will wrestle Huntingdon’s fifth-seeded Chris Gibson in the semifinals.

The fourth-seeded Hajzus went 3-0 with two pins and an 18-4 major decision in the quarterfinals. He’ll tangle with Ridge’s top-seeded Jayden Imler in the semifinals.

The fourth-seeded Matthews went 2-0 with a technical falls and a pin in 3:29 to get a semifinal matchup against Ridge’s top-ranked Kooper Deputy.

The second-seeded Miller pinned both of his opponents and will face Pine Grove’s third-seeded Scout Frantz in the semifinals.

Williams advances

GROVE CITY – Glendale’s Daniel Williams advanced to the quarterfinals at 285 at the Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School with a pin and a technical fall.
