NBC frosh gets noticed for his victory at ICC track and field meet

ALEXANDRIA — It was warm at Monday’s Inter-County Conference track and field championships, but not so much so that Northern Bedford freshman Christopher Corle intentionally wanted his shirt to nearly fall off.

Corle, one of if not the smallest athletes by stature competing at the meet, won the 3200-meter run in dominant fashion with a time of 10 minutes, 42.15 seconds and finished third in the 1600.

But his biggest battle of the day might have been trying to keep the straps of his oversized jersey on his shoulders as he ran.

“I think we’re literally going to special-order me a new one next year if I don’t grow,” Corle said. “This is the smallest jersey they have. It bothers me sometimes when the strap goes below my shoulder. I’ll try and lift it back up unless I’m dying out there.”

Fortunately for Corle, he showed little signs of distress while running on Monday as he pulled away from his competition in the 3200.

“It feels good to be a champion, especially since I am a freshman,” Corle said. “I want to try and get to states and get to 10:30 by the end of the season. I’d also like to get down to 4:50 in the mile.”

Monday’s race was special for the freshman, because he went into the race a fan of many of the athletes he was running against.

“It was a good experience, and I had a lot of fun running with some of the seniors that I looked up to when I was in seventh and eighth grade,” Corle said. “I ran with a lot of them today, and it was fun.”

Two of Corle’s Northern Bedford teammates on the girls side are at the other end of their track and field careers.

Seniors Halle Baker and Bella Gable each also claimed an ICC title.

Baker won the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 5.5 inches.

“I feel great,” Baker said. “It’s amazing, because I had a sophomore slump. I was terrible. I used that as fuel to my fire, and I have built myself up and go do extra workouts on Saturday mornings. It’s really paying off.”

Baker joined the triple jump after it had started, because she runs on Northern Bedford’s 400-relay team, which competes around the same time it started.

But despite sprinting just minutes before her jumps and scratching on her first attempt, Baker was composed.

“You give me like 15 minutes, and I’m good. I’m used to it,” Baker said. “We do a lot of sprinting drills in practice, and I do a lot of running and working out on my own. That has kind of built me up, and I’m good to go pretty much right when I start.”

In fact, Baker’s other events actually help her prepare for the triple jump.

“It feels kind of like a warmup, because I run the 100 and the (400 relay), and that’s like getting ready to do my run on the runway for triple jump,” Baker said.

With the ICC championship secured, Baker has her eyes on the District 5 meet next Wednesday.

“My goal for districts is to win,” Baker said. “Right now, I’m sitting in a good position to do so, and if I get to states, I’d love to place. My goal right now is to get to 35 feet.”

Gable, who is pursuing both the school record and a spot at the podium on states after just missing it last year, won the shot put with a distance of 37 feet, 6 inches.

“I need to throw 38 to beat our school’s record, so I need 6 more inches,” Gable said. “This was my new personal best. I need to just put more power behind my throw. My technique was good today. I did everything right, but I feel like I could go faster and put more power behind it.”

Gable’s throw came after following the advice of her coaching staff.

“I followed through,” Gable said. “I opened up really well like my coach has been looking for me to do.”

The senior said there’s plenty to focus on when throwing the shot put.

“It’s not a luck thing, but at the same time, it is, because it’s a lot to think about when you’re going into the circle,” Gable said. “To actually get everything perfectly, that’s how you get a throw like I want to get.”

The only other winner from the Mirror’s core coverage area was Juniata Valley’s Trenton Norris in the boys javelin with a throw of 144 feet, 1 inch.

Norris also finished fifth in the discus.

“It came off my hand really well,” Norris said. “I have been looking to get to 150 all year. I have been trying to work on throwing with momentum. I was talking with some kids from different schools, and they told me if I could get some speed into my throws, it correlates with how far the jav will go. I need to get my plant step with my left foot down harder to get to that 150.”

Everett won the boys team championship over Southern Fulton, and Berlin Brothersvalley bested Windber to win the girls team title.
