Tyrone boys, Lady Tigers capture District 6 swimming team titles

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Hollidaysburg girls swim team, led by Margaret Bandstra’s win in the 100-yard breaststroke, won its second straight District 6 Class 2A team championship on Saturday at the Penn State McCoy Natatorium.
On the boys side, Tyrone captured its first-ever District 6 Class 2A title, 164-141, over runner-up Central Cambria.
The Lady Devils were also the runner-up to Hollidaysburg, 243.5-156.
Bandstra won the breaststroke in 1 minute, 6.06 seconds. She was also part of relay wins in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle on Friday along with teammate Addison Smith — who won the 200 freestyle individually on Friday.
Smith, Jackie Bevan, Maya Grinberg and Kiri Dougherty won silver in the 400 freestyle relay on Saturday in 3:57.13.

One Hollidaysburg boys swimmer — junior Kaden Henderson — also made history. Henderson broke the District 6 Class 3A meet record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.91. The previous mark of 57.05 by State College’s Ben Gingher had stood since 2017.
The Hollidaysburg boys also got a third-place finish from Johnny Vu, Nathan Kanish, Draven Peters and Eli Weaver in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:09.66.
The Golden Tigers finished third in the 3A boys team race with 167 points behind champion State College and runner-up Central Mountain.
The district champion Golden Eagles won the 400 freestyle relay when the team of Lucas Bonsell, Patrick Van Kleunen, Cameron Gallagher and Owen Dunklebarger touched the wall in 3:30.85.
Van Kleunen was also the runner-up individually in the 100 backstroke in 56.18, and teammate Matthew Eckenrode won silver in the 500 freestyle in 5:09.9 ahead of third-place finisher Ethan Haycisak of Central Cambria, who finished in 5:12.67.

Jaycee Kleinstuber earned a bronze medal for the Lady Devils in the 500 freestyle with a finish in 5:42.23, and she was also a member of the third-place 400 freestyle relay team with Karlee Nileski, Kendall Magulick and Bryn Wandel in 4:00.22.
The Altoona girls, who finished third behind champion State College and runner-up Central Mountain in the 3A competition, got a third-place finish from Ella Heverly, Addison Fox, Lana Luke and Graycie Price in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:11.66.
The Altoona boys finished in fourth place in the 3A team race.
