Nguyen-Moore, Kissell named scholarship award winners for Blair County HOF

Zaelinh Nguyen-Moore of Altoona Area High School and Jake Kissell of Bishop Guilfoyle Academy will each be presented with a $3,500 check at the Hall of Fame’s 21st banquet and induction ceremony Saturday at the Blair County Convention Center.

Reliance Bank sponsors the program for the Hall of Fame, which has presented scholarships annually since 1988 and has now awarded a total of $148,000 to deserving student-athletes.

The Hall of Fame balances the athletic and academic prowess of the nominees, along with their participation in community service.

Nguyen-Moore was a standout in basketball and soccer at Altoona, serving as team captain for both teams and captain of the basketball team for three years.

This past season, she helped lead Altoona to its fourth District 6 Class 4A championship and advance to the semfinals in the PIAA tournament.

She’s set to play basketball next season at Clarion University.

Academically, she ranks No. 11 in her senior graduating class of 440 and has a grade-point average of 97.68.

Zaelinh is Altoona’s senior class president and president of the National Honor Society.

Away from sports, she serves as a student tutor in addition to volunteering at the Arandale Elks, Veterans Home, Big Brothers-Big Sisters and the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.

Zaelinh is the daughter of Ann Nguyen and Daryl Moore.

“Throughout all of her academic, athletic and service endeavors, Zaelinh has consistently exemplified dedication, passion and true leadership,” Altoona senior class counselor Leah Trocchio said. “She inspires those around her and maintains a positive attitude in every circumstance.”

Kissell is a three-year letterwinner in football and basketball at BG, contributing to a PIAA Class A championship as a junior in 2024 and a runnerup finish in 2025.

As a quarterback and defensive back, he is a two-time all-state selection in football who is headed to play football at Villanova University.

He was equally impactful in basketball.

“Jake is the absolute leader of our team,” BG basketball coach Ryan Lestochi said. “He lifts kids up when they need it and pushes them when it’s necessary. He always embraces challenges and sets the tone for the team. He is very supportive of everything at BG, not just the sports he plays.”

Kissell ranks No. 16 in his graduating class and maintains a grade-point average of 95.1.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders of America and serves as president of BG’s Student Council.

He volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen and Mount Carmel, serves as a youth basketball instructor and mows lawns for elderly neighbors.

Jake is the son of April and Kirk Kissell.

The scholarship committee consists of Cory Tubo of Reliance Bank, Brian Irwin, Chris Kirwin, Susan Fries, Buck Frank and Neil Rudel.

“At Reliance Bank, we are proud to support initiatives that reflect our core values,” said Cory Tubo, Chief Commercial Banking Officer who will handle tonight’s presentation. “We are thankful for the opportunity to invest in our local athletes through the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame program year after year.”

“We’re very proud of the Hall of Fame scholarship program,” Rudel, HOF president, said. “The student-athletes are the best of the best, on the fields, courts and off, and that is the case again this year. We are especially grateful to Reliance Bank – from Tim Sissler to Denny Doll and now Cory Tubo — for their generosity and partnership.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
