Eagles get big win from Rawlings to spark victory

By Todd Irwin sports@altoonamirror.com It seems each dual meet Tyrone gets a big bout win from somebody who hasn’t in the past been heroic on the wrestling mat. Freshman star Kyle Scott came up big against Northern Bedford. Caleb McKinney beat Hollidaysburg’s Northwest Regional ...

McKinney part of Golden Eagles’ balance in victory

By Todd Irwin sports@altoonamirror.com TYRONE — Both Tyrone and Hollidaysburg are having trouble filling out their respective wrestling lineups this season. The difference between them, though, is the Golden Eagles have a more balanced lineup than the Golden Tigers. The Eagles won all eight bouts that were wrestled on the mat, including four by fall and two by major decisions. One of the two decisions was Caleb McKinney’s 6-0 win over Northwest Regional Tournament participant Rally Hoover. It was a highlight for the Eagles in their 50-6 win on Tuesday night at the Tyrone ...

Golden Eagles don’t allow forfeits to get them down

TYRONE — One of the challenges Tyrone second-year coach Quentin Wright is facing this season is having to forfeit three weights. To overcome that deficit and beat Northern Bedford on Thursday night in the Golden Eagles’ season opener at the Tyrone gymnasium, the Eagles had to shine in a majority of the other 10 weights. That’s exactly what they did. The Golden Eagles picked up four pins, including Korry Walls’ pivotal fall at 114, and delighted in freshman star Kyle Scott’s 5-1 win over returning Southwest Regional qualifier Eion Snider at 172 en route to a 43-28 ...

Vikes’ Johnson delivers in victory

By Todd Irwin sports@altoonamirror.com FLINTON — Glendale’s Dayton Johnson probably hasn’t been put into too many situations where a dual meet came down to him in the very last bout. On Wednesday night at Donald A. Kitko Memorial Gymnasium, the dual meet against Penn Cambria came down to him. And the Viking junior handled it like he had been there before. With the Panthers holding a 36-33 lead going into 139 pounds, Johnson recorded the pin in 1:33 to secure the Vikings’ 39-36 victory. It was the second Glendale win in as many days. “It feels great,” Johnson said. ...
