Lady Marauders remain perfect on the season

Girls basketball

So far this season, the Bishop Guilfoyle Academy girls basketball team has hit the hardwood floor hot every time out en route to a victory.

Thursday night was no exception.

The Lady Marauders jumped out to a 25-10 lead in the first quarter of play and cruised to a 70-31 win over Penns Valley at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.

In the first quarter, junior Anberlyn Petrecca led all Guilfoyle scorers with 10 points, while sophomore Layona Williams tallied seven.

“I thought we shared the ball really well,” Lady Marauder coach Kristi Kaack said. “I thought we made the extra pass in the first half, got on the boards, and got some second chance opportunity.

Junior Morgan Ruggery led the charge in the second quarter with nine of her 19 total points on the night to give BG a 35-point lead at the break, 50-15.

“Morgan Ruggery is so consistent with her game night in and night out,” Kaack said. “We always know that she will defend the right way.”

The win now moves the Lady Marauders to 15-0 on the season. Despite the success Kaack continues to give her team something to work on each night out.

“We just try to challenge them, every day at practice to get better,” Kaack said. “We’re thankful that we have a good group; we keep telling them practices should be the hard part, and the games should be the fun and easy part.”

Penns Valley, which saw its record fall to 8-8, put forth a solid effort in the first quarter to keep the deficit at 15-points. But at the end of the day, Bishop Guilfoyle’s toughness and stellar shooting became too much for them to handle.

“BG is a good team,” Lady Rams coach Terrance Green said. “They’re state champs for a reason, and we knew it would be a tough battle; we gave it our all; we did our best.”

Green says his team still has goals to obtain as the season continues.

“That’s what were focused on this back half of the season,” Green said. “I was very proud of the effort.”

Senior Elle Dinges led all Penns Valley scorers with 11 points, including nine from beyond the arc.

The Lady Marauders are off until next week when they take on Central Monday night. Penns Valley will host Bellwood Antis also on Monday.
