West wins all-star game at Mansion Park

The West beat the East, 17-14, in the annual Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association East West All-Star Game Sunday afternoon at Mansion Park, and the area played a big role in the victory.
Kevin Steele of Bedford was the head coach for the victorious West squad that included Bishop Guilfoyle’s Andrew Irwin and Josh Trybus and Hollidaysburg’s Jack Vyborny.
“There were some great athletes on both sides,” Steele noted, “and, fortunately, we were able to make a few more big plays and persevere at the end.”
Steele’s Bedford teams have played Guilfoyle so he was familiar with Irwin and Trybus.
“With the Guilfoyle guys, it’s a unique experience for me,” Steele offered. “They’re great players and they’ve won a lot of football games for obvious reasons. They’re great kids and great players and it was nice to have them on our team.
“I didn’t know (Vyborny) as well because we don’t play Hollidaysburg,” Steele noted,” but he’s a good kid and played well. It was nice to have local kids in the game and it was great to have the game here (Mansion Park) on behalf of the PSFCA.”
Darius Wise of Beaver caught touchdown passes from Williamsport’s Isaiah Hankins and Montoursville’s Brycen Mussina, the son of former major league pitcher Mike Mussina.
Gateway’s Jordan Washington kicked a pair of extra points and a 31-yard field goal for the West.
East most valuable player Tre McNeill of Philadelphia LaSalle recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for his team’s first score. The East also scored in the final minute of the game on a pass from Stephen Sturm to Amadou Barry.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Irwin, who is headed to Harvard. “As you can see by the score, there were a lot of good players here.
“It was awesome to play at Mansion one more time,” Irwin offered. “It’s not a BG uniform, but it’s still awesome playing here. I’ll definitely miss these nights and days.”
Trybus, like fellow all-stater Irwin, was playing his final game at Mansion Park which served as a springboard for BG’s three consecutive state championships.
“It was a great experience,” noted Trybus, who will attend Penn. “These are some of the best players from around the state and to be with this team and in this game was a very special moment.”
The West most valuable player, as selected by officials from the coaching association, was State College wide receiver Noah Woods, who will attend Slippery Rock.
Woods caught three passes for 90 yards and ran the ball twice for 12 yards. He was instrumental in the West’s last scoring drive when he made a nice catch of a Mussina pass for 39 yards.
