In Keegan they trust: Junior Myrick helps BG hold off Rangers in fourth

Keegan Myrick returned to full-time duty at just the right time for the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic Marauders, and it turns out, he had to do double duty, too.

Myrick, a junior, had a big night on the ground with two touchdowns as Bishop Guilfoyle hung on for a 20-12 victory over Forest Hills Saturday night at Mansion Park.

The teams went back and forth trading punts and turnovers on downs before a shanked punt set up the Marauders to put the game away to improve to 6-2.

Play of the game: Forest Hills shanked a punt which set up Bishop Guilfoyle inside the red zone at the 20. That set up Myrick’s second touchdown of the night from 10 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Player of the game: Myrick rushed 29 times for 177 yards along with the two touchdown runs.

Unsung hero: Myrick had to play quarterback because of an injury after regular starter Konner Kiesewetter went out in the first half with an injury.

Most vital statistic: The Marauders got the victory, despite committing seven penalties for 42 yards, and they finished with 8 yards of passing.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler: “When you have a bunch of guys hurt, you’re trying to find a little bit of offense, you rely a little bit on your special teams and tonight our special teams came through for us.”

Forest Hills coach Justin Myers: “You can’t make mistakes. First half we played pretty mistake free, second half wasn’t so much. We still had chances to win. We almost recovered the onside kick at the end to go down and score, but with losing, there’s reasons why you win and lose. We’re young, there’s times we have 8-10 freshman and sophomores sometimes. Those kids deserve to play and are getting better.”

Wheeler on Myrick: “We’re super excited to get Keegan back this week and get him some carries, and we thought early on he looked really good, and then he had to go into the quarterback rule we thought he did a good job. A backup quarterback doesn’t get a lot of reps during the week. He’ll be better this week if we don’t have Konnor.”

Myers on Myrick: “He’s a phenomenal athlete. He’s a game breaker. When their quarterback went down, and we saw him at quarterback we were worried because he has the ball in his hands every play, and we know that’s he’s going to run it.”

Notable: Kiesewetter’s injury is uknown and coach Justin Wheeler says he is day-to-day for next week’s game. … Bishop Guilfoyle recognized their Holy Trinity football program participants. … The Marauders had 16 first downs compared to the Rangers eight.

Records: Forest Hills is 1-7 while Bishop Guilfoyle is 6-2.

Next week: Forest Hills will host Westmont Hilltop and Bishop Guilfoyle heads to Chestnut Ridge.
