P-O loses numbers game

CLEARFIELD — Using statistics to tell the story of a game is usually risky business. Numbers can be misleading.

But not Friday night, not here at the Clearfield-Philipsburg-Osceola game.

This time the numbers painted a vivid picture of what happened in the Bison 62-0 romp over the Mounties. Consider this one stat for clarification: In the first quarter P-O ran off 15 plays for minus 11 yards. Clearfield snapped the ball 18 times for 237 yards and five touchdowns, an average of roughly a TD every 4.5 snaps.

Enough said?

“They can move the ball running or throwing,” P-O coach Brian McGonigal said. “They are a great team. They have a lot of athletes over there. And we gave them some bulletin board material during the week. We had a player who made a bad choice.

“I thought our kids played hard but they were a little intimidated. You could tell when they came out that they were a little timid.”

The unbeaten Bison (9-0) gave them reason to be as they unleashed a balanced attack led by quarterback Isaac Rumery, who has committed to Penn State as a preferred walk-on. He completed six of nine passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns while playing only the first half.

“I think he could hit a mosquito down the field,” said McGonigal of the sniper-accurate Rumery. “I think he’ll be able to compete at Penn State. He has a great opportunity in front of him.”

Yet Rumery was off a little on Clearfield’s first possession as he threw ain interception to TJ Thompson in the end zone.

But the next time Clearfield got the ball it scored on a 16-yard run by Brett Zattoni. Zachary Hess made the PAT at the 8:14 mark and the Bison were rolling.

Rumery found Taye Lynch all alone in the secondary for a 43-yard score the next time Clearfield got the ball, then Caleb Freeland scored from the 9 on Clearfield’s next possession with 4:20 still to go in the first quarter.

Zattoni got his second score when he bolted 49 yards on Clearfield’s first snap after a P-O) punt and with no time left on the clock Freeland scored again, this time from a yard out. Hess made the PAT setting the score at 35-0.

In the second quarter Rumery found Lynch running free for a 39-yard TD strike and with 5:02 left in the half it was Rumery connecting with Elijah Glass. Hess made it 49-0. The half ended with Clearfield on the P-O 6.

Zattoni finished with 117 yards on nine carries and Freeland chipped in with 87 yards on 10 attempts.

“They complement each other,” Clearfield coach Tim Janocko said of his running back tandem. “Zattoni is more of a bruiser and Freeland is more of the scatback type.”

But it’s Rumnery who is the ignitor in the Clearfield attack. He’s the latest in a long line of outstanding quarterbacks for the Bison.

“He’s at the top,” Janocko sad. “He has a great arm, he manages the game well and he can run. He has all of the tools.”

In the second half Janocko turned the game over to the backups and got a pair of touchdowns runs from Jason Plubell.

“We were able to spread the ball around,”Janocko said. “We were just hitting on all cylinders tonight. And we got some turnovers. It was a good night for us. But I was impressed with the P-O kids, they played hard. They did some good things.”
