One bad inning enough to do in Pirates pitching

MLB notebook

SARASOTA, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped to 12-6 in Grapefruit League action on Wednesday, falling 7-2 to the Baltimore Orioles.

Noah Davis started and suffered the loss after allowing three runs — on a Taylor Ward three-run homer) — on three hits and one walk. He started and retired the first 10 batters he faced, finishing with five strikeouts in that span. He did not make it out of the fifth inning. Reliever Justin Lawrence struck out two batters in a perfect inning of relief.

Offensively, Nick Cimillo connected for his second home run of the spring, a solo shot off Orioles starter Chris Bassitt. Jhostynxon Garcia doubled for his lone hit, but he is batting .571 this spring. His 12 hits were the third-most in the Grapefruit League this spring.

The Bucs will take on Atlanta tonight at 6:05. Bubba Chandler is expected to start for Pittsburgh.

O’s woes?

SARASOTA, Fla. Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle left Wednesday’s Grapefruit League game against the Pirates after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz told reporters that Mountcastle wanted to stay in the game, but his hand was sore.

Mountcastle appeared in 89 games for Baltimore last season, batting .250 with seven homers, 18 doubles and 35 RBIs. He missed two months during the middle of the season with a hamstring strain. This year, he is competing for a regular role after the Orioles signed Pete Alonso to a $155 million, five-year contract in December.

Starting at $2.99/week.
