TAMPA, Fla. — Endy Rodriguez homered and Konnor Griffin smacked a two-run double to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees, 5-3, in Grapefruit League action Monday night.
Griffin now has eight RBIs for the 12-5 Pirates, which is tied with teammate Ryan O’Hearn for the most for the Pirates in the spring. Rodriguez’s second home run this spring came off Yankees starter Max Fried.
Pirates starter Jose Urquidy worked into the fourth inning, giving up three runs. Isaac Mattson earned the win in relief, retiring all four batters he faced. He has not allowed a run this spring.
The Yankees (10-6) got home runs from Giancarlo Stanton and Paul DeJong.
The Pirates are off today but will be in Sarasota Wednesday for a 1:05 game with the Orioles. Noah Davis is expected to start for Pittsburgh.
Bucs moves
BRADENTON, Fla.– The Pirates optioned pitchers Bradan Bidois, Wilber Dotel, Thomas Harrington, Antwone Kelly and outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez to Triple-A Indianapolis Monday.
Additionally, catcher Omar Alfonzo, pitcher Kristian Curtis and utility man Mitch Jebb were reassigned to minor league camp, leaving the Pirates with 54 players still in camp.
White recognized
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Former National League President Bill White will receive the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award from baseball’s Hall of Fame on July 25.
The 92-year-old, a former star player and broadcaster, will be honored during the induction weekend, when Carlos Beltran and Andruw Jones enter the hall along with Jeff Kent. White hit .286 with 202 homers and 870 RBIs from 1956-69 for the New York and San Francisco Giants, St. Louis and Philadelphia.
He was a six-time All-Star and a New York Yankees broadcaster from 1971-88, then became baseball’s first Black league president when he succeeded A. Bartlett Giamatti. White served in the office from 1989-94.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Colorado Rockies reliever RJ Petit has a sprained UCL ligament in his right elbow, sidelining him indefinitely.
The club made the announcement on Monday, adding that the 6-foot-8 Petit will undergo further testing before a decision is made on what course of treatment Petit will receive.
The Rockies selected Petit with the first pick in last year’s Rule 5 draft.
The 26-year-old Petit was taken by the Tigers in the 14th round of the 2021 amateur draft and went 10-2 with a 2.44 ERA in two starts and 45 relief appearances last season for Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. He struck out 79 and walked 22 in 66 innings.
Petit is 21-15 with a 3.40 ERA and 14 saves in five starts and 182 relief appearances over five minor league seasons but has yet to make his big-league debut.
