According to published reports on Friday, the Pittsburgh Pirates are in discussions about a possible long-term extension with Konnor Griffin, MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 overall prospect, a source told MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.
The source told Mayo that the details “have yet to be hammered out, but the talk has been around a deal for as long as nine years and north of $100 million.”
Griffin, 19, is currently vying for a spot on the opening Day roster as the team’s starting shortstop. If he gets it, he would be the first teenager to make his MLB debut on Opening Day since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1989.
Griffin has four home runs this spring but he is only batting .184 with an OPS of .805. The Pirates selected Griffin ninth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft. Last year in the minor leagues, he batted .333 with 21 homers and 65 stolen bases.
In other news Friday, the Pirates lost 8-1 to Atlanta in Grapefruit League action to drop to 16-11.
Starter Yohan Ramirez worked one inning and struck out two without giving up a run. Pirate relievers gave up three in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
