Anglers loving all those cicadas

They began to show up in this area at the end of May, and within the past couple weeks, their pronounced clicking, rattling sound has been heard by just about anybody who has ventured outside. There are 12 broods of cicadas — a two to three inch-long black and orange-colored beetle with flies — and each appears across a variety of Eastern and Midwestern states at 17-year intervals. This is the year for the Brood X (or Brood 10) cicada, which last appeared here back in 2004 and won’t appear again here until 2038. Fishermen who use imitation cicada fly patterns, cicada lures, ...

Schembechler scandal growing

The Associated Press NOVI, Mich. (AP) — One of legendary University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler’s sons and two of his former players described in detail Thursday how they were molested by the team’s longtime doctor and how Schembechler turned a blind eye when they told him about the abuse, telling one to “toughen up” and punching his son in anger. Matt Schembechler, 62, and former Wolverines players Daniel Kwiatkowski and Gilvanni Johnson told similar stories about how Dr. Robert E. The ban is meant to curtail the spread of the always fatal brain disease, which can spread when captive deer from infected herds are transferred to farms in other parts of the state and pass it on wild deer, Minnesota Public Radio reported. “We want to make sure that we can protect the wild ...

The Associated Press ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Decades-long political and legal battles over drilling in America’s largest wildlife refuge took another turn when the Biden administration suspended oil and gas leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The move earlier this week was a blow to oil and gas proponents, who came as close as they ever have to starting a drilling program after the refuge was expanded 40 years ago to include the oil-rich coastal plain. The refuge was nearly opened to drilling in 1995 until President Clinton vetoed a bill sent to him by Congress. ...

Wildfires killed sequoias population

The Associated Press SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — At least a tenth of the world’s mature giant sequoia trees were destroyed by a single California wildfire that tore through the southern Sierra Nevada last year, according to a draft report prepared by scientists with the National Park Service. The Visalia Times-Delta newspaper obtained a copy of the report that describes catastrophic destruction from the Castle Fire, which charred 273 square miles of timber in Sequoia National Park. Researchers used satellite imagery and modeling from previous fires to determine that between ...
