NEW YORK — Jasson Dominnguez is headed to the injured list yet again after spraining a shoulder when he crashed into Yankee Stadium’s outfield wall, opening a path for heralded prospect Spencer Jones to make his major league debut.

Dominguez was hurt eight pitches into Thursday’s 9-2 win over Texas as he caught a leadoff drive to left by Brandon Nimmo. His MRI revealed a low grade AC sprain of his left shoulder, and initial concussion tests were negative.

“That’ll put him on the IL, and that could be a few weeks,” New York manager Aaron Boone said.

New York intends to call up Jones before tonight’s series opener at Milwaukee, a person familiar with the team’s decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced.

A 6-foot-7 outfielder, Jones was selected by the Yankees 25th overall in the 2022 amateur draft.

Jones, 24, leads the minor leagues with 41 RBIs, batting .258 with 11 homers, 18 walks and 41 strikeouts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was not in the RailRiders’ lineup Thursday night at Worcester.

Dominguez, 23, made a sensational debut in September 2023, hitting .258 with four homers and seven RBIs in eight games before a scan revealed a torn right UCL.

Playing outfield for the Yankees for the second time this season after seven games as a designated hitter, he ran 81 feet to catch Nimmo’s 101 mph shot. He gloved the ball 375 feet from the plate as his shoulder hit hard against a video advertising board, knocking his glasses off as well as his hat while he lay motionless.

Red Sox lose Anthony

Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony has been put on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right wrist.

The team made the announcement on Thursday before the start of a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Anthony hurt his wrist during his first at-bat of Monday’s game at Detroit.

He flew back to Boston to see the team’s hand specialist. Interim manager Chad Tracy said there wasn’t enough progression for Anthony to avoid going on the IL.

Anthony says the injury is not serious and he wants to get back in the lineup as soon as possible.

Reds pitcher exits

CHICAGO — Cincinnati Reds pitcher Rhett Lowder exited his start against the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the fourth inning with right shoulder discomfort.

Lowder threw 59 pitches before leaving the game with the Cubs leading 1-0. He opened the inning with a pair of walks on nine pitches, then threw a change-up in the dirt to Michael Busch.

After a brief conversation with manager Terry Francona, Lowder left the game. Lowder came into the game with a 3-2 record and 5.09 ERA in six starts.

Cubs minus starter

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd had surgery Thursday to repair a partial meniscus tear that he suffered in his left knee while playing with his children.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said he expected Boyd to miss about six weeks.

“It’s kind of the minor meniscus surgery so we know he’s going to miss a month, six weeks,” Counsell said ahead of his team’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. “Probably closer to six weeks with getting it ramped back up. That’s what we’re hopeful for. Obviously, we’ll see how it all goes and I think the important thing is how much time do we miss throwing.”

Boyd, 35, injured the knee on Wednesday. The left-hander joins starters Cade Horton, Justin Steele and Jordan Wicks on the injured list. Horton (elbow) is out for the season while Steele (elbow) is not expected back until the second half.

Counsell said he had yet to decide how to fill the the scheduled start for Boyd (2-1, 6.00 ERA) tonight at the Texas Rangers. Javier Assad and Ben Brown are both potential options to enter the rotation.

Starting at $2.99/week.
