Sports at a glance: Court battles will continue

Athletes and college sports administrators continue to end up in court less than a year after the House vs. NCAA class-action lawsuit was settled.

Legal experts see no end in sight without federal legislation codifying rules on NIL and eligibility or a a totally new structure for the enterprise.

Duke and Cincinnati sued quarterbacks who entered the transfer portal alleging breach of contract. More athletes are suing the NCAA to gain extra eligibility years. Attorney Mit Winter said federal law, a Supreme Court ruling or collective bargaining will stop the chaos.

FIFA looks at Cup security

MEXICO CITY — Mexico has reassured FIFA that it can safely host the World Cup after deadly cartel violence this week.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday that FIFA representatives plan to visit Mexico soon. She said they will review security and transport mobility in the host cities.

Sheinbaum said transport projects remain urgent in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Recent violence follows an army operation against a major cartel leader.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has told Sheinbaum he has full confidence in Mexico as a World Cup host.

Star Messi knocked down

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Soccer star Lionel Messi was knocked to the ground by a fan and a security guard at the end of Inter Miami’s friendly match in Puerto Rico.

Inter Miami was playing Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle in Bayamón on Thursday when a fan ran to the center circle and grabbed Messi by the waist before both were pulled down by a security guard.

Messi appeared to be unharmed. The Argentine star immediately got up and walked to another part of the pitch. It happened around the 88th minute of the exhibition tour match. Several fans jumped onto the pitch at Juan Ramón Loubriel stadium.

Bediako gets denied

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama Supreme Court denied a request by former professional basketball player Charles Bediako to play for the University of Alabama again this season while he appeals his eligibility case against the NCAA.

According to online court records, the high court on Friday denied Bediako’s emergency motion for an interim injunction so he could play again for the Crimson Tide. Bediako said an expedited decision was needed because the end of the regular season and postseason tournaments are fast approaching.

An email seeking comment was left with Bediako’s lawyer after regular business hours on Friday.

Heat’s Powell sidelined

MIAMI — All-Star guard Norman Powell has a strained right groin and will be out for at least a week, the Miami Heat said Friday.

Powell got hurt in the first half of Miami’s loss at Philadelphia on Thursday night. An MRI confirmed a Grade 1 — or low severity — strain, and the Heat said Powell’s status is being listed as week to week at this point.

Powell is Miami’s leading scorer this season, averaging 22.5 points per game.
