The BMZ Law team had a little added incentive entering the Division 4 championship game of the Central Blair Recreation Commission’s Lakemont Park Men’s Summer Basketball League Tuesday night.
The BMZ Law squad was sponsored by Altoona attorney Thomas Hooper, who was a friend of recently deceased beloved former area men’s college and high school boys basketball coach Tony Labriola.
“We wanted to dedicate this win to Coach Labriola,” said BMZ Law standout Tolson Schilling, who, along with his brother Tage, shared team scoring honors with 13 points in fifth-seeded BMZ Law’s 44-34 title victory over third-seeded Lytle’s Transfer. “Our sponsor, Thomas Hooper, knew him well.”
The BMZ Law team held serve from start to finish, building a 22-18 halftime lead and maintaining its advantage through the second half.
After Lytle’s Transfer closed to within 25-23 on an early second-half basket by John Kantoski, BMZ Law ran off eight straight points to take command for good, 33-23.
Jeremiah Crockett started the rally with a field goal, and Tracer Schilling — the third Schilling brother on the BMZ team — scored a field goal off an inbounds pass, giving BMZ Law a 29-23 advantage.
Tolson Schilling followed with a driving layup, and Tage Schilling capped off the run with another driving bucket to give the winners their 10-point cushion.
“Overall, we played amazing,” Tolson Schilling said. “We kept our composure, and we came out in the second half running. It was a case of good teamwork all around.”
Standout guard Brayden Haney, who will be an incoming senior at Claysburg-Kimmel High School, led Lytle’s Transfer with 13 points, including a pair of 3-point field goals. Power forward Josh Settle added 10.
“We didn’t execute well enough I guess,” Haney said. “Especially me. I didn’t make many shots and I took some 3’s instead of working the ball inside.”
