They’ve still got it: Lilly Conrad Chiropractic wins 20th Greater Altoona City League title in last 23 seasons

Since the early 2000s, Lilly Conrad Chiropractic has seen plenty of changes from guys who have moved on from playing to those who have stepped in to keep their incredible dynasty going.

Lucas McCoy believes it comes down to the desire to continue doing one thing for the guys who have made up their roster over the last 23 years.

“We’re playing to win,” McCoy said. “We’re not playing just to have fun. It’s the same group of guys that keep coming back year after year. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve added some young bucks with the dual roster with AAABA.”

Lilly scored in all but two innings — including a four-run third — and didn’t look back as they captured their 20th Altoona Greater City League Championship with an 11-3 drubbing over Refresh Med Spa in Game 4 of the final.

Refresh did get an early lead as Maxwell Rogers belted an RBI single in the first, but Lilly took over from there.

In the second inning, Lucas McCoy reached on an RBI single followed by a Cody Gallaher groundout that gave Lilly the lead at 2-1. He went 2-for-4 at the plate and two RBIs.

They broke the game open in the third as Jim Dunlap knocked in a run on a single before Tim Fabbri cleared the bases on a double to extend their lead to 6-1.

“If you’re scoring in five out of seven innings, that puts the pressure on their defense and their pitching,” Lucas McCoy said. “Earlier in the series they helped us out with some defensive play. Today, we earned it. We hit the ball and were able to move base runners around the pads.”

Refresh cut into the deficit in the bottom of the frame as Robbie Yahner drove a run home to make it 6-3, but that’s as close as they got.

“They’re very stingy,” Refresh Med Spa manager Joe Fornwalt said. “It’s tough to score against them, they play great defense. Their pitchers throw strikes and I think a lot of our problem here was errors and walks that gave their better hitters more at bats than our top of the lineup guys. Hats off to them. They’re good guys.”

Derek Younker shut the door, going five innings allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout. PJ Holberg finished it with two hits allowed and a strikeout in two innings.

“Our starting pitchers with (Shane) Suter, (Derek) Younker, (PJ) Holberg have been here for a long time for us, and they’re still staying healthy, still throwing strikes, still being competitive,” Lucas McCoy said. “If you have the starting pitching, you can definitely win some games in this league.”

Lilly added on in the fifth as Pat Gully smacked a line drive for an RBI double to add a run before adding two runs in the sixth and seventh. Gully went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Fornwalt is proud of the progress his team made this season including getting a win in the championship round.

“That meant a lot, especially as to how young our team is,” he said. “These youngsters have played in a lot of championships, but not in a championship against a team of that caliber. They’ll remember this as we continue to build this.”
