Everett rides defensive effort to win Building II title
Everett won the Building II Athletic Club High School Girls Basketball Summer League championship. Team members include (from left): First row—Alexa Robertson, Lyla Levy, Jade Colledge, Gabrielle Dadetto, Emma Ritchey. Second row—League director Mark Bennett, Morgan Bowser, Rachel Mills, Millie Levy, Ally Ritchey, Allison Wood.
Both the Bishop Carroll Catholic and Everett Area high school girls basketball teams featured young rosters last season but still made appearances in the PIAA playoffs.
The Lady Huskies even made it all the way to the PIAA Class A semifinals before being eliminated by eventual state champion Bishop Guilfoyle Academy.
The two teams met in the Building II Summer League championship on Wednesday evening, and although Carroll led by as many as eight points in the second half, it was the Lady Warriors who used a solid defensive effort to take the league championship, 32-28, over BC.
The game was two 20-minute halves with a running clock until two minutes left in each half. Everett held Bishop Carroll to just nine points in the second half.
“We just kept fighting defensively,” Everett coach Keith Moyer said. “We gave up a couple offensive rebounds in the first half, and in the second half we eliminated those opportunities.
“We had 10 kids that were committed all summer. We don’t have a lot of numbers, but I’ll take the 10 we have any day.”
Down 28-26 with just over a minute left, the Lady Warriors’ Lyla Levy knocked down a 3-pointer to give her team their first lead of the game.
After a stop on the other end, Addison Wood was fouled to go to the free throw line. Wood was 3-for-6 on the night before that trip, but Wood sank both free throws to give Everett a 31-28 lead.
“I was ready for them,” Wood said. “I knew those two would put us (where)at the most they could do was tie it. Even if they can make a shot, we’re still in the game.”
Emma Ritchey hit another free throw with 12.9 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Adelyn Myers had 10 points to lead Bishop Carroll.
“We got a lot of young girls in,” Bishop Carroll coach Nick Smith said. “We mixed in a lot of people. For a summer league, I think it went very well. We had a good effort. It just didn’t go the way we wanted tonight.”
