Trump’s support helped Rob Manfred decide on ending Pete Rose’s ban

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump’s support of Pete Rose was among the factors Major Legaue Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred weighed when he decided last month that permanent bans by the sport ended with death, which allows the career hits leader to be considered for the Hall of Fame.
Manfred announced the new interpretation on May 13, a decision that allows Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson to be considered for a Hall committee vote in December 2027.
Manfred also said computer technology to appeal ball/strike calls could be in place for the 2026 regular season.
During this past spring training experiment in 288 games, teams were successful on 52.2% of their ball/strike challenges using the Automated Ball-Strike System.
“I do think that we’re going to pursue the possibility of change in that process and we’ll see what comes out at the end of that,” he said.
Nola still hurting
TORONTO — Injured Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola will not throw a scheduled live batting session today because of mild soreness on his right side, manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday.
Last week, Nola said his return from the injured list with a sprained right ankle was progressing more slowly than expected and that he probably needed to make a minor league rehabilitation start.
Nola is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts. No date has been set for him to throw next.
The Phillies put Nola on the 15-day injured list on May 16 to avoid another injury cropping up while he was favoring the ankle. The 31-year-old veteran allowed 12 hits, nine runs and three homers — all career highs — in a 14-7 loss on May 14 against St. Louis.
Nola, who signed a $172 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2024 season, was injured on May 8 during pregame agility drills when the Phillies played the Rays at Steinbrenner Field.
Bad feelings in Boston
BOSTON — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson got into a shouting match with Red Sox first base coach Jose Flores on the field at Fenway Park before Wednesday’s game.
Neither team would discuss what it was about. A video posted on social media showed Anderson and Flores going face-to-face during batting practice.
Angels pitching coach Barry Enright also joined the argument before Red Sox third base coach Kyle Hudson came in and tried to break it up. Neither manager would elaborate on the brouhaha.
First time for everything
MIAMI — Hunter Goodman tripled and doubled and the Colorado Rockies beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 to complete a sweep in their first series win of the season.
Rockies starter Kyle Freeland allowed two unearned runs over 6•3 innings. Freeland scattered four hits and struck out four for his first victory since September 2024.
Colorado, which began the series with a major league-worst 9-50 record, won its third straight for the first time this season. It was the Rockies’ first three-game sweep since they beat the San Diego Padres in May 2024.
