Hollidaysburg captures Pennsylvania championship

From Mirror reports

BRADFORD — Hollidaysburg captured the Little League Baseball 12U Pennsylvania State Tournament on Monday at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Kessel Athletic Complex.

Hollidaysburg, which beat Greencastle, 6-2 and 10-0 on Monday, will now represent Pennsylvania in the four-team Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Bristol, Conn. from Aug. 7-12. It’s one of 10 regionals in the U.S. and will feature the Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington D.C. champs.

The winner of that regional will advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport.

“It’s a great feeling,” Hollidaysburg manager Jim McGough said. “It’s unbelievable. The kids worked hard and were prepared. They’re overly excited to go out and compete for a chance to play in Williamsport.”

After splitting its first two games in the tourney, Hollidaysburg needed to win five straight and accomplished that by beating Greencastle twice in the championship round on Monday.

“It speaks a lot to our character,” McGough said. “We asked, ‘how do we respond after a loss?’ And the team responded great. We stayed together as one team and came through when we needed to.”

In the first game Monday, Caleb Detrick and Brody Dull each hit three-run homers in the fourth inning to help Hollidaysburg overcome a 2-0 deficit and win 6-2. Dull worked the first 3ª innings on the mound, and Braden Hatch pitched 2-plus shutout innings of relief.

In the clincher, Chase Link drilled a two-run homer in the first inning to give Hollidaysburg a 2-0 lead. After scoring two runs in the third, Link added another two-run homer in the fourth to build the lead to 6-0. In the fifth, Ty McGough hit a two-run single, and then Hollidaysburg won, 10-0, when Aspen Anderson scored on a wild pitch. Jackson Boob went the distance, firing a three-hit shutout.

Starting at $2.99/week.
