Furious comeback falls short for IUP on road
SLIPPERY ROCK — Falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter, the IUP football team fought back to get into its game with Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon, only to fall in the end, 45-42, in a battle of top-ranked teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
The Crimson Hawks (5-2, 2-1 PSAC) came into the game ranked 16th in the nation in Division II. Slippery Rock is 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the PSAC, and was ranked ninth in Division II going into the game.
IUP trailed 31-14 at the break, and cut it to 38-28 after three quarters of play. Quinton Maxwell threw touchdown passes of 17 and 8 yards to Dom McNeil, ,and a 2-yard pass to Duane Brown for another score. Maxwell also scored on a 1-yard run with nine seconds left in the game to cut it to 45-42, but the Crimson Hawks ran out of time.
The Rock went up 45-35 with 1:30 to go in the game on a Charles Snorweah 12-yard touchdown run.
IUP is on the road again this Saturday with a noon kickoff at Clarion.
