Errors contribute to Curve’s streak ending

The Altoona Curve’s seven-game win streak came to an end with a 2-1 loss to the Bowie Baysox Friday night in front of 4,610 fans at PNG Field. It was an uncharacteristically bad night defensively for the Curve, who had three errors against the Baysox, two of which led to both runs being unearned. “We didn’t make plays when we needed to,” Altoona manager Robby Hammock said. “We’ve been able to cover it up a little bit offensively, but tonight they pitched a really good game and kept us at bay and made the errors hurt.” A fielding error by Joe Perez in the first inning ...

Chen pitches Curve to seventh straight win

By Jarrod Prugar For the Mirror A three-run seventh inning pushed Altoona to a 3-1 Eastern League win — its seventh straight — over the Bowie Baysox in front of 3,579 fans at PNG Field Thursday night. The inning was set up by Curve starter Po-Yu Chen getting out of the top half of the frame by allowing only one run. “We were in trouble there and it was a great job by Po-Yu to get out of that inning with only one run,” Altoona manager Robby Hammock said. “We got the big double play there and were able to capitalize on their baserunning mistake and get out of that ...

Chandler, bullpen combine to stop Bowie

By Jarrod Prugar For the Mirror Six pitchers combined for a shutout to help Altoona to a 4-0 win over the Bowie Baysox in front of 5,041 fans at PNG Field Tuesday night. Altoona starter Bubba Chandler tossed the first two innings, needing only 19 pitches to dispatch six Baysox hitters in a row. Chandler struck out two and did not allow a hit. Fret not, the early exit was by design because on Thursday, Chandler will depart for Texas to participate in Major League Baseball’s All-Star Futures game at Globe Life Field. Knowing he was only throwing a few innings allowed him ...

Bednar, Borucki both in town with Curve doing rehab work

Pirates closer David Bednar and reliever Ryan Borucki both saw action in Altoona with the Curve as part of their respective rehab assignments Tuesday night. Bednar is beginning game-action in his recovery from a strained left oblique while Borucki is putting the finishing touches on his assignment in his return from left triceps inflammation. “Coming down on a rehab assignment, you just want to get back as soon as you can and today felt good so it was definitely a step in the right direction,” Bednar said following his inning of action. The next step for Bednar is yet to be ...
