Open top seeds named

MELBOURNE, Australia — Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka were officially made the top-seeded players for the Australian Open which begins Sunday at Melbourne Park.

The announcement on Wednesday comes a day ahead of the tournament draw.

Two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner was seeded second, with Alexander Zverev third and 10-time champion Novak Djokovic fourth. Sabalenka, Iga Switek and Coco Gauff are the top three seeds in the women’s draw for the second consecutive year.

Madison Keys returns as the defending champion and the ninth-seeded player, one of four American women among the top 10 seeds.

Biffle’s home gets robbed

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating an alleged break-in at the North Carolina home of retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, who died last month in a plane crash along with six others.

The alleged theft was reported on Jan. 8. Investigators believe someone entered a safe in the Mooresville home. Sheriff Darren Campbell and his office said a backpack, $30,000 in cash, guns and racing memorabilia are missing. No arrests have been made.
