State awards funding for recreation projects
Projects in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clearfield and Huntingdon counties recently received funding through the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, according to a news release from the Shapiro administration. The grants, administered by DCNR’s Bureau of Recreation and Conservation Community Conservation Partnerships Program, also called C2P2, aim to help communities improve parks and playgrounds, build and repair trails, conserve open space, restore rivers and watersheds and grow local economies through outdoor recreation.
In total, Gov. Josh Shapiro announced that nearly $82 million is being invested in new state funding to support more than 295 recreation and conservation projects across the state.
C2P2 funding in this round includes $31.3 million for 140 park, recreation and conservation facility projects; $16.2 million to conserve 4,818 acres of land and expand public access; $13.1 million for 53 statewide and regional conservation and recreation organizations; $9.5 million for 22 community and watershed forestry projects; $8.2 million for 29 trail planning and development projects and $3.2 million for 16 river conservation projects.
The following projects, listed by county, have received grants through C2P2 funding:
Bedford County
Bedford Borough, $640,000: Rehabilitation and further development of Green Park. Work to include renovation of a tennis court; construction of a pedestrian walkway, pickleball courts, pavilion, comfort station, concession stand, sound barrier, parking area and stormwater management measures; installation of picnic tables and fencing; ADA access, landscaping and project sign.
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, $94,400: Payment toward a conservation easement of approximately 723 acres in Southampton Township for open space and passive recreation.
The Bedford Fulton Joint Recreation Authority, $138,900: Preparing a trail study for the rehabilitation of the Sideling Hill and Rays Hill tunnels on the TOPP Trail in Bedford and Fulton counties. Work to include an electronic written report.
Cambria County
Forest Hill School District, $180,000: Rehabilitation and further development of Forest Hills School District Courts in Adams Township. Work to include renovation of tennis courts; construction of pickleball courts, pedestrian walkways and parking area; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
Northern Cambria Borough, $128,000: Payment toward the acquisition of approximately 98 acres along McCombie Avenue in Northern Cambria Borough for open space, passive recreation and water access.
Southmont Borough, $50,000: To coordinate urban and community forestry in Southmont Borough; engage communities in planting trees and build local tree stewardship capacity; prepare a tree inventory. Work to include an electronic written summary report.
The Adams Croyle Recreation Authority, $42,000: Payment toward the acquisition of approximately 10.7 acres along Lake Road in Croyle Township for an addition to 1889 Park and the Johnstown Flood Memorial.
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, $429,200: Payment toward the acquisition of approximately 364 acres in Susquehanna Township for open space and passive recreation.
Centre County
Centre ClearWater Conservancy of Central PA Inc., $85,800: Coordinate and fund Centered Outdoors program by managing a gear library; expanding transportation assistance; providing skill and wellness workshops; and increasing staffing and professional training. Work to include a written summary report.
ClearWater Conservancy of Central PA Inc., $383,600: Installation of about 15 acres of riparian forest buffers in the Susquehanna River Watershed. Work to include landowner outreach and engagement; buffer plantings and post-planting establishment; project sign and other related site improvements.
Harris Township, $49,200: Development of Tussey Pond Park in Harris Township. Work to include construction of fishing access and pedestrian walkways; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
Huntingdon County
Alexandria Borough, $150,000: Development of Melvin Lane Nature Park along the Juniata River. Work to include construction of a boat launch, pavilion, walking trail, parking area and stormwater management measures; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
ClearWater Conservancy of Central PA Inc., $374,900: Development of Rothrock State Forest Trails in Jackson Township. Work to include construction of approximately 9.1 miles of trail; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
Multiple counties
Allegheny, Cambria, Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland — Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, $250,000, to coordinate Urban and Community Forestry in Southwestern Pennsylvania and engage communities in planting trees and building local tree stewardship capacity. Work to include an electronic written summary report.
Berks, Bradford, Centre, Chester, Crawford, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Mercer, Montgomery, Schuylkill, Sullivan, Tioga, Venango, Warren and Wyoming — Stroud Water Research Center Inc., $1.8 million, for installation of about 208 acres of riparian forest buffers along waterways. Work to include landowner outreach and engagement; buffer plantings and post-planting establishment; project sign and other related site improvements.
Centre, Clinton, Huntingdon, Lycoming, Snyder and Union — Chesapeake Conservancy Inc., $74,000, for installation of about 9 acres of riparian forest buffers and post-planting establishment for 15 acres in the Susquehanna River Watershed. Work to include landowner outreach and engagement; buffer plantings and post-planting establishment; project sign and other related site improvements.
Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor Inc., $345,000 — Manage the heritage area and heritage area initiatives including the 2026 mini-grant program. Work to include an electronic written summary report.
National Road Heritage Corridor, $530,000 — Manage the heritage area and heritage area initiatives; complete a cultural landscape resource inventory; support partners in commemorating America’s 250th anniversary; and conduct a feasibility study for reuse of a historic service station in South Union Township, Fayette County. Work to include an electronic written summary report.
Pennsylvania Environmental Council Inc., $180,000 — Conduct a mountain bike trail assessment for the PA Wilds; produce a branding and signage plan for mountain bike trails in Altoona; support the development of priority trail connections in south central Pa.; support the development of the PA Trail Finder; provide leadership and guidance on gravel cycling; and conduct a trail sustainability assessment in the Circuit Trails Region. Work to include an electronic written summary report and an electronic written signage plan.
