MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers are bringing manager Pat Murphy’s strange eating habits to fans.
Murphy went viral in a recent interview for pulling a pancake out of his uniform pocket and taking a bite — sharing the flapjack with the reporter — as he detailed different ways he shoves food into his pockets to snack on in the dugout.
The moment has spawned quite the movement in Milwaukee. The ballpark announced Friday that “Murph’s Pocket Pancakes” will be sold at American Family Field during Sunday games for the rest of the season, starting with this weekend’s series against the New York Mets.
Still confident
MILWAUKEE — New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledged feeling frustrated by the team’s recent hitting struggles but expressed confidence the slump won’t last long.
The Mets had lost eight of nine to fall 2.5 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East as they began a three-game series with the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.
The Mets were coming off a 4-1 loss to Cleveland in which they went hitless until the ninth inning. Stearns expressed support for hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes.
Still rehabbing
LOS ANGELES — Roki Sasaki threw a three-inning simulated game, putting him on track to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers late in the season.
The rookie pitcher has been on the injured list since mid-May due to a right shoulder impingement.
On Friday, Sasaki threw 46 pitches, reaching speeds of 97 mph. Manager Dave Roberts noted Sasaki’s improved physical condition and cleaner throwing motion. Sasaki joined the Dodgers last offseason with high expectations but struggled in his first eight starts.
The team hopes he gains confidence and consistency as he prepares for a potential return.
Stanton on the move
NEW YORK — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone says Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return to the outfield for the first time in nearly two years.
Stanton has had his playing time limited while the Yankees have used slugger Aaron Judge as the designated hitter while working his way back from a flexor tendon strain in his right elbow.
Stanton was not in the lineup for the third straight game on Friday as the Yankees opened a three-game series against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. Boone says Stanton could be in the outfield as soon as this weekend.
Closer activated
MILWAUKEE — Shelby Miller is ready to help Milwaukee in its playoff push just over a week after the Brewers acquired the veteran right-hander from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the trade deadline.
The Brewers reinstated Miller from the injured list before their Friday night game with the New York Mets. The Brewers also recalled pitcher Tobias Myers from Triple-A Nashville and placed pitcher Logan Henderson on the injured list with elbow inflammation.
