There is hope for malls, but it’s dim

For several decades, Americans have been pronouncing the mall shopping experience either dead or on the verge of such an end. The Southern Alleghenies region has not been spared from witnessing and experiencing that unfortunate, long-evolving development. Anyone familiar with the problems of Altoona’s Logan Valley Mall and Johnstown’s Galleria — as well as the demise many years ago of Johnstown’s Richland Mall — can attest to how shopping habits and interests have changed over the years and reshaped the local-level and regional retail climates. The centerpiece of a mall ...

Return to toll booths would aid Turnpike

I read the article by John Finnerty, regarding Turnpike penalties. I can sum this up very quickly. To keep from losing all this money from turnpike fares from being lost, go back to toll booths. Someone in government thought that getting rid of all the toll booth operators to save the state money would be the way to go. The article even states that the state has been losing money for over 20 years. They have tried recouping the money by sending bills to the violators. That did not work. Why do they think that changing the penalties will provide incentive for the drivers to pay their ...

Governor Garrity will benefit the youth

As a young adult, I firmly believe that Stacy Garrity would assist young Pennsylvanians across our Commonwealth. For one, her leadership as state treasurer has helped over 107,000 Pennsylvania families receive $1,000 bonuses to their PA 529 accounts, which help with education costs. Should she help Pennsylvania unleash its energy potential, our electricity rates could plummet. Pennsylvania currently pays much higher electricity rates per kWh than the bordering states of Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Delaware. Given Pennsylvania’s abundance of natural gas, increased drilling ...

Try living within taxpayer means

I read with trepidation the recent article about the Hollidaysburg School board meeting. I read how the teachers association president decided to publicly confront the board regarding the recent contract negotiations for the teachers union. This sounds like a peat and repeat of the Mount Nittany Hospital negotiation fiasco. The union representative confronts the board with a group of (concerned) citizens to show how angry they are with the board. These folks should serve on a board to learn fiscal realities. I understand some say, “just increase taxes” makes it sound so simple. ...

Pennsylvania lawmakers stumble on e-bike regulations

The Pennsylvania General Assembly, too often slow to react and slow to act, is again living up to that dubious, unflattering reputation, this time regarding e-bikes and e-scooters. Rather than already having properly addressed those topics with the best interests of the Keystone State and its residents in mind, the General Assembly continues to stumble along as the injury, death and damage totals tied to the bikes and scooters escalate. But, hey, as a CapitolWire article published in the Mirror’s Sept. 9 edition indicated, the legislature has delivered the message that it is racing ...

Republicans still need to vote this November

As a three-time Trump voter, I often hear from fellow voters about how they are feeling, whether at the grocery store, the gas pump, or when opening their bills. This personally affects my friends, family, and me. With this in mind, I would find it wrong for Republicans and conservatives to cede their constitutional duty to vote and send Republicans to Harrisburg and Washington, D.C. Should Democrats win, they will raise taxes on all Americans. They will reignite the failed border policies of the Biden administration. They will bring back 9% inflation through their big-government ...
