Mirror important to our community

With this being National Newspaper Week, I would like to acknowledge Altoona Mirror for its excellent work as a local news outlet. With free speech being attacked lately and internet rumors being spread about as actual fact-based news, it’s comforting to have a local newspaper to give the public a view of our surrounding activities and opinions. With the inception of the internet, small-town newspapers are disappearing too often, which could be argued as a danger to democracy. Living in an information bubble is not good. Bigelow-Cherry is a farmer’s wife, mother of two grown children, devoted daughter and caregiver to her parents and a former Sunday School teacher and Scout leader. I am writing this letter in support of Suzanne Bigelow-Cherry for magisterial district judge. I grew up in Tyrone and went to high school with her. I know her as “Susie.” We both attended college at Pitt. While I stayed in the Pittsburgh area, Bigelow-Cherry returned home. My sister Desiree was a young lady with a disability. When it became necessary for my parents, Herk and Merle Ammerman, to be appointed as her legal guardians, Bigelow-Cherry handled that for them.
