Ward credited with changing lives
This is a follow up to the recent Altoona Mirror article: “Ward remembered for leadership, kindness to all.”
In that wonderful article were several outside local businessmen paying tribute to G. Bill Ward.
I would like to take you back to early October 1968, when I was discharged from the U.S. Navy, and returned to Hollidaysburg to join my wife, Thelma, and 1-year-old daughter, Lisa.
My job search took me to Ward Trucking. I interviewed with W. W. Ward, chairman of the board, and President G. Bill Ward. These were two of the finest gentlemen I had ever met. I was so impressed with them that I knew I wanted to be a part of their company.
On Oct. 21, I got the call that I was hired and would be reporting to the Customer Service/Cargo Claims Department under Manager Charles “Chick” Dillen.
That day changed my life forever.
President G. Bill Ward was a great people person. Almost daily, he would walk through the office to say hello to everyone. He had an open-door policy. When he spoke to me, I knew he was genuine and sincere and made me feel very comfortable in all of our conversations. He wasn’t just our president, he was a true friend to all his employees.
After my retirement of 40 years in January 2009, I was able to keep in contact with G. Bill Ward through the Quarterly Ward Retirees Luncheon.
I truly miss our friend.
