Christian principles built America

In response to the opinion piece claiming “Christian nationalism is not Christian,” I offer both a fact-based and faith-based perspective.

God gave humanity the Ten Commandments — not to restrict us, but to guide us toward living rightly and peacefully. Those same principles shaped America’s founders and the laws that still protect our freedom today.

Even among founders who were not devout believers, there was agreement that liberty depends on virtue. John Adams wrote, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.” The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 affirmed that “religion, morality, and knowledge” are “necessary to good government.” These are historical facts, not slogans.

Acknowledging our biblical roots doesn’t force religion on anyone; it recognizes that honesty, respect for life, fidelity, justice, and personal responsibility — all rooted in Scripture — built the moral foundation of our republic. Remove that compass, and freedom falters.

The phrase “separation of church and state” was meant to protect worship, not to erase God from public life. From early schools to Congress, faith and civic duty walked hand in hand.

Christians are called to be the “salt and light” of our culture (Matthew 5:13-16) — not by domination, but by example. Loving God, honoring His commandments, and seeking righteousness for our nation are not “Christian nationalism.” They are Christian citizenship.

America’s greatness rests on moral decency and reverence for our Creator. Let’s not forget that.
