Donald H. ‘Peep’ Free

Born in Altoona, he was the son of the late Harold and Esther Free.

On April 8, 1972, he married Jeanne Benton Free, sharing 54 years of devoted marriage.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children, Amy Moran and her husband, Michael, of Altoona and Adam Free and his wife, Janelle, of Altoona; his sisters, Shirley Neely and her husband, Robert, of Duncansville and Joy Free of Duncansville; and his cherished grandchildren: Macy Jones, Dylan Free, Carter Free and Sophia Moran. He also leaves behind his beloved grandpuppies: Milli, Tucker and Ollie.

Donald was a 1965 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. He went on to serve his community as a sewage plant operator for Logan Township.

A man deeply committed to service, he was a devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Lakemont and a lifelong member of the Lakemont Fire Company.

His dedication to the fire service began in 1962, the same year the Lakemont Fire Company celebrated its 50th anniversary. Over the years, he served with distinction as fire chief from 1970-73 and again in 1975 and 1976, as well as assistant chief and trustee.

In total, he dedicated 64 years of service to the Lakemont Fire Department and was a 59-year member of the Pennsylvania Central District Volunteer Firemen’s Association.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2026, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 344 Baynton Ave., Altoona, with Monsignor Becker officiating.

Interment will follow at Alto-Reste Park, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s memory to Lakemont Fire Company, 312 Lotz Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
