Dr. Charles M. Haas Jr., 76, Altoona, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023, at UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. He was born in Williamsport, the son of the late Dorothy K. (Shontz) and Charles M. Haas Sr.
Charles married Michele Cravotta on Nov. 23, 1974.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years; two daughters, Rebecca Haas (Brittney Sickles) of Vancouver, Canada, and Sarah Haas (Doug George) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his identical twin brother, Dr. Donald Haas (Joan) of Greensburg; and sister, Karen Leddy (Tom) of San Jose, Calif. Other surviving relatives include: his nieces and nephews, Dr. Amy Kreutel (Robert), Adam Haas, Nicole Cravotta and Ryan Cravotta; sister-in-law, Debbie Cravotta; and cousins, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Eugene Cravotta; and sister-in-law, Vicki Hofe.
Charlie graduated from Loyalsock High School in 1964. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated in 1968. He attended the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, graduating in 1972, and completed his internship and pathology residency at York Hospital.
Over the course of his career, Charlie was Chief Pathologist and Director of Laboratory Services at Mercy Hospital, Nason Hospital, Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital and UPMC Altoona.
Charlie loved playing tennis, swimming, golfing, traveling, trying new restaurants, going to the movies, visiting museums and playing the New York Times games and puzzles.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery. A separate Celebration of Life will be held in the future.
Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.
