Maria C. “LaLa” (Karnes) Schirf, 66, Altoona, passed away at her home Monday morning after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She spent the last days of her life surrounded by family and friends who loved her to the moon and back. She was born in Butler, daughter of the late William and Jean (Andreassi) Karnes Sr.
Maria married Matthew J. Schirf Sr. on Oct. 27, 1990, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Altoona.
Surviving are her devoted husband of 31 years, Matt; a daughter, Angela Cobler and son-in-law, Daniel; a son, Matthew J. Schirf Jr. and soon-to-be wife, Regina Shuff; two grandsons, whom she loved dearly, Brendan and Camden Cobler; a brother, William Karnes; her three sisters: Sylvia Villadolid, Andrea Karnes and Gina Brandt, all of Altoona; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.
Maria was a light to all who knew her. She accepted everyone she met into her life with unconditional love. Once you became her friend, you were her family. Maria was an excellent cook and enjoyed getting together for “Sunday Dinner” with her loved ones. She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and loved to sing and dance. Maria brought fun wherever she went, and her smile was unforgettable.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus, with Father D. Timothy Grimme as celebrant. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.
