A city man was taken into custody after allegedly returning from Philadelphia with cocaine hidden inside his shoe.

Kendall Michael Patterson, 34, was arraigned Thursday by Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio on a felony count of possession with intent to deliver and single misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was remanded to the Blair County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Altoona police noted in their report they were aware of Patterson, through prior investigations, making routine late-night trips to Philadelphia before returning to Altoona. In a previous traffic stop on Patterson, officers confiscated about 10 grams of cocaine that he had hidden inside his shoe, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Officers conducted another traffic stop on Patterson about 3 a.m. on July 2 due to his driving on a suspended license. Patterson just returned to the area from Philadelphia, where he had arrived about 9 p.m. and remained for about 90 minutes, the police report states.

After initiating the stop, officers reported a strong odor of marijuana emanating from within Patterson’s vehicle. Patterson was ordered out of the vehicle and officers deployed K-9 Officer Blue to perform an open air sniff test on the vehicle. Blue alerted officers to the presence of controlled substances by the front passenger side door, the report states.
