Logan Township board to consult solicitor on filling supervisor post
After the sudden passing of longtime Supervisor Joseph Metzgar Monday, the remaining Logan Township supervisors will consult township solicitor Dan Stants about finding someone to take his seat on the board, according to Chairman James Patterson.
The supervisors have 30 days from Monday to choose a replacement, according to township Manager Tim Brown.
The supervisors could choose a successor at their next meeting via a nomination from one supervisor, a second of that nomination and a majority vote, according to Brown.
A likelier process would involve a formal announcement of the vacancy at the next meeting, accompanied by an invitation for applications and resumes from interested individuals, then in-public interviews of those applicants at the following supervisors meeting, followed by an executive session to discuss candidates, then a public vote to appoint Metzgar’s successor, Brown said.
A successor would need to be a registered voter who has lived in the township for at least a year, according to an online source.
If the supervisors fail to choose a successor after 30 days, due to a tie vote of the four who remain, the township Vacancy Board becomes involved.
It consists of one individual, whose purpose is to break the tie, and there are 15 additional days to accomplish that.
After those 15 days, if the matter is still unresolved, it can go to Blair County court via a petition for the appointment of a successor, according to Brown and an online source.
Metzgar’s replacement would serve until the end of 2027.
That successor, and any other qualified individual, could file for election early in 2027 to run for the remainder of Metzgar’s six-year term.
The term runs through 2031.
