For $400 under the “Novelty Architecture” category, a Jeopardy! clue on April 14 said, “Everett, Pennsylvania is home to an ice cream shop named for these dome structures but actually shaped like a sundae.”
And all three Jeopardy! contestants were stumped.
Area ice cream lovers, however, would have responded with, “What is an Igloo?”
“That’s the only one I would have gotten,” co-owner Paula Clingerman said with a laugh about the statements on the hit game show that require contestants to answer with the correct question.
Clingerman and her husband Kenny have owned the domed-shaped business along East Main Street in Everett, Bedford County, for 30 years and opened a second — but boxed-shaped — location in New Paris about 10 years ago.
The Igloo was originally built as a showpiece for modular homes in 1977 by H&R Enterprises. After both the concept and the company failed, it was bought and sold many times before being converted into an ice cream shop in 1994 under the name Bill and Fred’s Ice Cream Emporium.
After buying the shop in 1996, Clingerman said they’ve never witnessed any national television-level attention like this before.
She said she had to do a double take when watching Tuesday’s episode.
“I was like, ‘what’s this?'” Clingerman said. “Wow, I never expected it.”
Clingerman wasn’t alone; she posted a short clip from the episode on The Igloo’s Facebook page, and supporters flooded the comment section with both support and shock.
“I LOVE that this question stumped them all,” Dani Yost wrote underneath the post that accumulated more than 500 likes and 30 comments as of Wednesday afternoon.
InCahoots Farm also commented, “Big timing in a small town!!”
The Igloo has also received many calls since Tuesday night, including Clingerman’s relatives in Harrisburg.
Clingerman said she’s very thankful for the amount of support their shop has received, commending her employees and customers.
“We’re very thankful, and it was very funny to see,” she said.
