Bellwood-Antis Public Library offers monthly programs

The Bellwood-Antis Public Library will offer the following programs this month.

– Every Saturday in March, youth volunteer Addison presents a Storybook Saturdays, a Saturday morning storytime program with stories, songs and crafts. This program is geared towards preschoolers and toddlers, but all children are welcome. No sign-ups needed. Weekly themes include: March 14: Kindness Counts; March 21: Lucky to Learn; March 28: Community Helpers.

– Family Fun Night is on the move! Starting in March, our Family Fun Nights run Thursdays alternating with Club Lego sessions. Join us at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 26 for the March Family Fun Night. Family Fun Night is optimized for children ages 3 and up: younger children are welcome, but will need help from a grown-up or older sibling to do activities.

– We present a PAWS to Read session from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 14. Kids will meet and read to an adoptable cat friend from the Central PA Humane Society. Reading to animals is an ideal way for children who may struggle with reading to build skills while hanging out with a non-judgmental animal friend.

This program is for children ages 5 and up: We ask that a parent or caregiver stay with their child during the program. The library will also host a Girl Scout Cookie pop-up from 10 a.m. to noon the same date.

– Starting in March, the Hub, CareerLink of the Blair County’s afterschool program for teens, comes to the library twice a month. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 on both dates, teens can learn job-ready skills via fun activities. Mock interviews, resume games, meet-ups with local businesses and free snacks. Any student in grades 6-12 is welcome.

– Release the wiggles at Toddler Tuesday, a special toddler sized, toddler friendly storytime with lots of songs, dancing and the kind of silliness you can only get from a trained professional librarian!

Our winter Toddler Tuesdays are at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday March 31. Toddler Tuesday is for children ages 18 months to 3 years. New families are always welcome.

– Potatoes, fungi and history — with a side of green! Join Juniata Valley Audubon Society at the library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 for a special St. Patrick’s Day presentation potluck dinner. Bring a covered dish, utensils, and your own drink. Or simply arrive at 7 p.m. for the program, which will explore one of the most powerful intersections of nature and human history: the Irish Potato Famine. Tom McCoy, president of the Mycological Association of Washington, D.C., will guide us through: The rise of the humble potato; the devastating role of a fungal-like pathogen; and the politics that turned crop failure into catastrophe.

To celebrate the season — and St. Patrick’s Day — we’re adding a potato-inspired potluck and inviting everyone to wear a touch of green

– Do you feel lucky, blockhead? Club Lego will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 19. Kids ages 5 and up are invited to an evening of Lego free-

styling using the library’s elite collection of Lego bricks and minifigures. No signups needed, walk-ins welcome. We only ask that an adult stay in the building while the kids construct.

– Put on your dancing shoes and join us for an evening with Phil McCaulley playing a mix of everyone’s favorites at the Bellwood Eagles Club from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 27. Tickets available at the library or from a Friend of the Library. Dancing, live music, raffles, games, and light refreshments. Cash bar.

– At their March meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 30, Chapters & Chat discusses “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann. This National Book Award Finalist chronicles how in 1920s Oklahoma, wealthy Osage Indians were murdered for their oil rights. The FBI’s first major homicide case uncovered a conspiracy targeting the tribe.

The February title “Small Things Like These” by Claire Keegan will also be discussed at this meeting.

New members are always welcome at Chapters & Chat. Purchase the book from your favorite bookseller or ask at the checkout desk for an interlibrary loan.

– Bookworms, save the date for our Spring Used Book Sale that runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 and continues during regular library hours from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 13 through Thursday, April 16. It concludes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18 with Bag Day discounts. We sell gently used books of all types, puzzles, games, movies, and music. All proceeds benefit the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.

Starting at $2.99/week.
