Tyrone Area School District faring well despite ongoing Pennsylvania budget stalemate

Tyrone Area School District is in good financial shape amid the state budget impasse, Business Administrator Faith Swanson said.

“We’re not looking like we’re going to be in a position that we need to borrow. We might have to pull out of our capital reserve to make ends meet, depending on how long this impasse will last,” Swanson said.

According to Swanson, the district has about $12 million in its capital reserve fund and spends about $2.5 million — including payroll — each month.

Swanson said she’s hopeful the budget impasse will be resolved by December. In the meantime, the district has stopped making payments to some vendors, she said.

School officials are also looking for ways to cut back on expenses, Swanson said, noting many of the district’s field trips are funded through the district’s Parent Teacher Organization.

If the state budget impasse goes into 2026, Swanson said that would “definitely put a crunch on” the district’s planning of the 2026-27 preliminary budget.

Tyrone Area will begin planning for its preliminary budget in January, she said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
