For the first time in its 104-year-old history, two women were elected to the Altoona YMCA board of directors: Mrs. Ida Wolfberg and Mrs. Ardie J. Dillen. James Angus was president.

The state Department of Environmental Resources appropriated $115,000 for the Blair County solid waste program, $30,000 of it was to provide Altoona and Logan Township residents with blue, plastic experimental recycling baskets.

A wind storm downed a telephone pole and trees, cutting off telephone service to businesses like the Altoona Mirror, VanZandt VA Medical Center, Blair Senior Services and the Outback SteakHouse.
