City man receives three to six years for gun thefts

Charge for corruption of minors withdrawn as part of plea deal

HOLLIDAYSBURG — An Altoona man has pleaded guilty to stealing guns from vehicles in exchange for a sentence of three- to six-years’ incarceration, followed by four years’ probation.

Michael Davis III, 23, who has been in the Blair County Prison since Altoona police arrested him May 10, entered the pleas Friday in Blair County court, where Judge Jackie Bernard imposed the negotiated sentence and described it as “well deserved.”

While defense attorney Benjamin Kahn spoke of his client’s youth and relatively short criminal record, Bernard countered that he’s also stealing guns and in one case, involved local juveniles in the effort.

“So he was also corrupting other members of the community,” the judge said.

While a corruption of minors charge was filed in one of Davis’ cases, it was withdrawn as part of the negotiated plea agreement. But when handing down Davis’ sentence, Bernard told him that he was to have no contact with the juveniles involved in his case.

Altoona police charged Davis after an investigation into the theft of firearms from vehicles on Dec. 31,

2023, Jan. 1, 2024, and Feb. 1, 2024. Police also charged him with burglary and criminal mischief related to an April 10, 2024, incident. After taking Davis into custody, police got a warrant for his cellphone and found photos of Davis holding guns. Police subsequently released those photos to the public and asked anyone recognizing the weapons to contact them.

When Bernard asked Davis what brought him to Blair County from Brooklyn, N.Y., Davis told her that he has children. At the time of Davis’ arrest, he had an Altoona address.

Davis’ guilty pleas applied to offenses that included: theft from a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit theft, illegal firearm possession, burglary, criminal mischief, criminal use of a communications facility and criminal mischief.

Bernard also ordered Davis to complete cognitive behavioral therapy as part of his sentence.
