Trio face abuse of corpse charges
BEDFORD — Three Bedford County residents will face abuse of corpse charges in court after waiving the charges Wednesday morning during Bedford County Central Court.
Derek Edward Ashley Louk, 29, Courtney Shianne Boden, 24, and Jordon Robertson, 19, were charged with two misdemeanor counts of abuse of corpse for allegedly burning and burying the body of Tyler John Matthai in April 2022.
Louk, who faces criminal homicide, murder of the first degree, murder of the third degree and related charges for allegedly killing Matthai, had been denied bail on those charges and remains in the Bedford County Correctional Facility. On the abuse of corpse charges, his bail was set at $50,000.
Boden, who also faces four misdemeanor counts of tampering with/fabricating physical evidence in Matthai’s killing, remains behind bars on $50,000 bail. On the abuse of corpse charges, her bail was set at $50,000.
Robertson, who also faces one misdemeanor count of tampering with/fabricating physical evidence related to Matthai’s killing, was previously released on $35,000 unsecured bail on that charge. On the abuse of corpse charge, he was released on $15,000 unsecured bail.
Matthai, 26, was allegedly killed by Louk on April 26, 2022. Police received a tip in May about the incident, and during the investigation, Louk admitted to using an AR-15 rifle to shoot Matthai after he witnessed Matthai abusing his girlfriend, according to the police report.
Louk said he knew Matthai was dead and enlisted the girlfriend, Boden, and a friend, Robertson, to help dispose of the body, court documents show.
The abuse of corpse charges were filed Feb. 15 by the Attorney General’s Office, which took over the case when the county’s then-District Attorney Lesley Childers-Potts referred about three dozen cases to the AG’s office.
