Altoona man arrested in North Carolina
Reed sought by police in connection with 17th Street crash
An Altoona man wanted in connection to a June 10 crash was arrested in North Carolina on a felony warrant issued by Logan Township police.
Shawn Albert Reed, 50, is being held at the Pitt County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Blair County on charges related to the crash that injured several children of the Erickson family of Altoona.
According to a police report, Reed was operating a white Mustang coupe when he failed to stop for the red signal while traveling westbound on South 17th Street at a high rate of speed.
Police said the Mustang hit a red pickup about 4:28 p.m. at the intersection of South 17th Street and McMahan Road. Three juveniles from the pickup were transported to UPMC Altoona, with two of the youth suffering severe injuries, police reported.
The road was closed for about four hours as police reconstructed the crash.
Blood test results allege that Reed was driving under the influence of multiple controlled substances at the time of the crash, police said, and an arrest warrant was issued.
Reed is being charged by Logan Township police with two counts of aggravated assault by motor vehicle by while driving under the influence, two counts of aggravated assault by motor vehicle, four counts of recklessly endangering another person, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving under the influence (general impairment), failure to stop at a steady red signal and three summary traffic violations.
