SCI Huntingdon second in COVID-19 infections

State facility reports 17 inmates, 16 staff test positive for virus

A state prison in Huntingdon County is reporting the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases within the state correctional system.

Seventeen inmates and 16 staff members at the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon have tested positive for COVID-19, based on information provided Thursday by the state Department of Corrections.

In response, the gymnasium at SCI Huntingdon has been turned into an infirmary for inmates testing positive for the coronavirus and staff members assigned to the gym are expected to dress in full personal protective equipment.

SCI Huntingdon houses almost 2,000 inmates, including 53 whose sentences were handed down in Blair County, based on information available through an online prison inmate locator. The facility employs about 650.

Based on the combined 33 positive test results, SCI Huntingdon is now recognized as the state prison with the next-to-highest number of COVID-19 cases, second to SCI Phoenix in Montgomery County, where three inmates have died this month after testing positive for COVID-19.

As of Thursday, SCI Phoenix had 69 positive COVID-19 tests, with 27 coming from inmates and 42 from prison employees.

In other state prisons, however, the COVID-19 presence appears to be lower.

At SCI Smithfield, also located in Huntingdon County, three staff members — and no inmates — had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Thursday.

At SCI Houtzdale in Clearfield County, no positive COVID-19 tests were reported among inmates or staff, although a false positive was recorded there in early April.

Since March 29, all state prisons have been following quarantine restrictions that the state said were imposed to limit and restrict the potential spread of COVID-19 cases within a facility. During quarantine, inmates are fed in their cells and movement within the facility is restricted.

Among county prisons, Lebanon County in eastern Pennsylvania reported four positive COVID-19 test results on Wednesday, which came from three inmates and one medical staff member. Those inmates were separated from the rest of the population, county leaders reported, and the medical staff member is staying home from work.

Closer to home, Blair County Prison in Hollidaysburg has had no positive COVID-19 test results as of Thursday, Warden Abbie Tate said. Centre County Prison in Bellefonte, meanwhile, has had two inmates test positive for COVID-19.
