Police: Tyrone man tried to swap refrigerators

A Tyrone man is accused of breaking into his neighbor’s apartment so he could swap refrigerators.

According to charges filed by Tyrone police, Michael D. Holden, 35, of 950 Washington Ave., Apt. 1, allegedly took a back door to his upstairs neighbor’s apartment off its hinges and tried to switch refrigerators sometime early on May 31.

The break-in was reported June 2, and when police responded, glass from the outside door was on the ground and the inside door leading to the back stairs had been taken off its hinges.

Police said there were scuff marks on the wall and damage to the door frame and stairs and the upstairs neighbor’s refrigerator also showed minor damage.

The neighbor suspected Holden had tried to take the refrigerator, and police noted that Holden allegedly admitted he had broken into the apartment in text messages with a member of the neighbor’s family.

Holden allegedly indicated he was “trying to swap refrigerators because his was leaking water,” Tyrone police Officer Dustin Rhoades noted in the charges.

Holden was released Thursday on an unsecured $20,000 bond after his arraignment on felony charges of burglary and criminal trespass as well as a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

A preliminary hearing on the charges is scheduled for Tuesday in Tyrone District Court.
