Briefcase: Business news of local interest

Sheetz joins initiative

Sheetz became the first convenience chain to join the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge, a voluntary initiative in which participating organizations commit to reducing energy consumption by 20% over 10 years.

Now just seven years into joining the program, Sheetz has achieved that goal by reducing energy consumption by 20% across its more than 830 locations. Sheetz remains the only convenience store chain participating in the challenge, which includes nearly 300 organizations across nine key market sectors and 24 Fortune 100 companies, such as Citi, Intel Corp., Nike and Walgreens.

Since 2011, the Better Buildings Challenge has driven significant environmental and economic impact, including $24.2 billion in cost savings, 25 billion gallons of water conserved, 4.4 million tons of waste diverted from landfills and 3.9 quadrillion British thermal units of energy saved, which is equivalent to powering tens of millions of U.S. homes for one year.
