An Opening Exhibition Celebration for the The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) special exhibition titled “Our History is Your History — Works by Jewish Artists in the SAMA Permanent Collection,” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 25. SAMA will present two screenings of the film Woman in Gold (2015), a biographical drama based on the true story of Maria Altmann and her fight to reclaim art stolen by the Nazis during World War II. A matinee screening is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, and an evening screening is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, May 1. A suggested $5 donation supports this and future SAMA programs. The Allegheny Chorale will celebrate 250 years of America’s independence with a spring concert, “I Hear America Singing.” The Chorale will perform two concerts, 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1407 Eighth Ave., Altoona, and 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at First Presbyterian Church, 13th St. and Logan Ave., Tyrone. At the Tyrone concert, the 46th Pennsylvania Regiment Band, a prominent local Civil War reenactment band who performs period-accurate music using 19th century brass instruments, will perform as people are gathering for the concert as well as during the intermission.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) will present a children’s program to accompany the special exhibition, “Our History is Your History – Works by Jewish Artists in the SAMA Permanent Collection” highlighting prominent Jewish artists represented in its Permanent Collection. Registration is encouraged but not required for these free programs. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents do not need to purchase tickets and are encouraged to view the exhibits while their children are participating in the workshop. The Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World Through Art Program will help children learn about the principles of Tikkun Olam, the Jewish values of kindness, justice, and care for the world, through a recycled art workshop and kindness stone activity. Workshop dates are Wednesday, April 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for ages 6 to 9 and Friday, May 22, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for ages 10 to 14.
The Iron Bridge Dinner Theater is returning to the Bell Mansion in Bellwood, from Thursday, April 30, to Saturday, May 9, to present “The Savannah Sipping Society,” a popular, laugh out loud comedy about four Southern women, an unlikely chance meeting and weekly happy hours to reclaim their lives, find friendship, and embrace second chances. Saint Francis University Shields School of Business students announce Carnival Craze for a Cause, hosted on the Saint Francis University campus. The carnival and vendor fair will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30 on the campus mall, with an alternate rain location inside the auxiliary gym behind the Stokes-Twyman gym. The fair will include vendor tables, music, carnival games, food, and a basket raffle. $10 dollars will get 10 tickets, which will allow individuals to purchase food or carnival game tickets. There will be basket raffle tickets sold separately. Individuals from all surrounding communities are encouraged to attend this event to make a difference in their local community. All proceeds will go to the Dorothy Day Outreach Center.
